New data from UNESCO shows a worrying global decline in freedom of expression and growing safety concerns for journalists worldwide.
According to the World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development Report 2022–2025, key indicators of freedom of expression have fallen by 10% globally since 2012. Over the same period, self-censorship among journalists has surged by 63%, reflecting mounting pressure on media professionals.
The report links these trends to broader democratic backsliding in several regions and stresses the urgent need for stronger international cooperation to protect journalists and uphold independent media.
UNESCO emphasized that safeguarding freedom of expression remains essential to democratic governance, transparency and public trust in institutions.
