More than half of countries worldwide have introduced bans on mobile phones in schools as governments seek to reduce classroom distractions while maintaining students’ digital skills, according to a new analysis by UNESCO.
The report found that 114 education systems, representing 58% globally, now have national policies restricting phone use in schools, a sharp increase from 24% in 2023. Education authorities say the measures aim to improve student focus, academic performance, and classroom engagement.
However, UNESCO emphasized that restrictions alone are not enough. The organization called for a balanced approach that promotes responsible technology use and ensures equitable access to digital learning tools.
The agency reiterated its support for a human-centered and rights-based approach to integrating digital technology in education, ensuring that innovation benefits all learners while safeguarding their well-being.
