The number of children and young people out of school worldwide has increased for the seventh consecutive year, reaching 273 million, according to a new report by UNESCO.
The findings come from the 2026 Global Education Monitoring Report, considered a leading global reference on the state of education. The report attributes the rise to rapid population growth, ongoing crises and shrinking education budgets in many countries.
It estimates that one in six school-age children globally remains excluded from education, while only two-thirds of students complete secondary school.
Despite the challenges, the report notes that several countries are making notable progress, underscoring the importance of tailoring education policies to national contexts and priorities.
