The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) convened an extraordinary meeting to strengthen the protection of cultural heritage in Lebanon following an official request from Lebanese authorities.
The emergency session of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict resulted in granting provisional enhanced protection to 39 cultural sites across the country. The committee also approved international financial assistance exceeding $100,000 to support urgent safeguarding and emergency response operations on the ground.
UNESCO officials emphasized that the measures aim to prevent damage to Lebanon’s cultural heritage and ensure rapid intervention in the event of escalating security risks. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to preserving cultural property during times of conflict in accordance with international conventions protecting heritage sites worldwide.
