UNDP Expresses Grave Concern over Bombing of UN Compound in Gaza

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) expressed deep distress over preliminary reports of the shelling of the United Nations compound in Gaza City, which UNDP’s Program of Assistance to the Palestinian People managed until 13 October when UN staff vacated the premises.

There have been reports of a significant number of deaths and injuries due to shelling in the area. Last week, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reported that several hundred people seeking refuge had entered the compound, and it seems that this number has significantly increased since then.

It is unacceptable that civilians continue to suffer from the conflict's ongoing tragedy, and immediate action must be taken to stop it. The safety and protection of civilians, their infrastructure, and UN facilities must be respected at all times. International humanitarian law, including principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution, must be upheld.

The UNDP's Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People was established to improve the economic and social conditions of the Palestinian people. Since 1989, the UNDP has been working in Gaza to help the people in need.
