The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has estimated the cost of rebuilding the Gaza Strip at around $70 billion, highlighting the immense scale of destruction following the war.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, UNDP said that at least 55 million tons of debris remain scattered across Gaza, calling the situation one of the most complex reconstruction challenges in recent history.
The agency reported that about 425,000 housing units** have been either damaged or completely destroyed during the conflict, adding that early assessments suggest a significant number of bodies may still be found during debris removal operations.
“Recovery in Gaza will be a long and complex process,” UNDP said, stressing that reconstruction requires coordinated international efforts covering infrastructure, essential services, and community rebuilding. The program noted it has “very promising indications” regarding potential financing for Gaza’s reconstruction.
UNDP underscored the need to begin work under a comprehensive and sustainable recovery plan to restore basic living conditions and support long-term stability.
Meanwhile, medical sources in Gaza reported that since October 7, 2023, the death toll has risen to 67,869, with 170,105 people injured.
Many victims are still believed to be trapped under the rubble, as rescue teams continue to face major obstacles reaching affected areas due to the extensive destruction and ongoing security risks in parts of eastern Gaza.
