UN: 4 Million Women, Children in Sudan Need Rescue, Food Aid

The number of people suffering from food insecurity continues to rise in Sudan for the third year in a row, according to what the United Nations (UN) announced, as about four million women and children under the age of five need rescue and nutrition assistance during the year 2023.

According to the UN, "more than half of the severely food insecure people in the country (53 percent) live in the center, east and north of the country."

The UN estimated the total number of people affected by food insecurity in the country until this year at about 15.8 million people and indicated that at the present time, 30 percent of Sudanese have to “walk for more than an hour” to the nearest medical institution, and it takes the task of fetching water. more than 50 minutes" for about 26 percent of the country's population.

Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world, and a third of its population of about 45 million people is facing an escalating hunger crisis, and about 65 percent of Sudanese live below the poverty line, according to a United Nations report issued in 2020.
