UN Welcomes 45-Day Extension of Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Amid Rising Civilian Toll

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has formally welcomed the announcement of a 45-day extension to the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. The diplomatic breakthrough follows intensive bilateral discussions facilitated and brokered by the United States.

A spokesperson for the United Nations stated that the Secretary-General is strongly urging all involved parties to fully respect the cessation of hostilities. Guterres called for an immediate halt to further attacks and reminded all factions of their enduring obligations under international law, specifically international humanitarian law.

The United Nations reiterated its firm commitment to supporting all ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving the comprehensive implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Rising Toll on Civilians

Despite the positive diplomatic momentum, the humanitarian situation on the ground remains deeply concerning. Imran Riza, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, pointed out that civilians continue to bear a "mounting and horrific toll" due to ongoing military actions, despite the initial ceasefire framework having been established a month ago.

Riza emphasized that the rising casualty figures reflect lives irreparably damaged or lost, fractured families, and local communities forced to endure repetitive cycles of fear, displacement, and profound loss.

UNICEF Issues Urgent Warning Over Child Casualties

Adding to the urgency, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) issued a stark warning regarding the vulnerability of youth in the region. The agency highlighted that children in Lebanon continue to pay the heaviest price for the persistent instability, displacement, and psychological trauma.

According to UNICEF data, at least 59 children were reported killed or injured in just the past seven days, despite the foundational ceasefire agreement originally enacted on April 17.

International mediators hope that this 45-day extension will provide the necessary window to secure a sustainable peace and halt the humanitarian decline affecting thousands of innocent families across the region.
