UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has officially welcomed the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, hailing the diplomatic breakthrough as a critical step toward regional stability.
In a statement released late Thursday by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres expressed his profound appreciation for the United States' role in facilitating the agreement. The temporary truce aims to halt hostilities that have displaced thousands and caused significant humanitarian distress on both sides of the Blue Line.
A Path Toward Resolution 1701
The Secretary-General emphasized that this ceasefire should not be viewed merely as a pause in fighting, but as a window of opportunity. He urged both nations to use these ten days to pave the way for meaningful negotiations and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006).
"The United Nations remains committed to supporting all efforts aimed at ending hostilities and alleviating the suffering of communities caught in the conflict," the statement read.
Upholding International Law
Guterres called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and strictly adhere to their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law. He expressed hope that this agreement would serve as a foundation for a "lasting and comprehensive peace" in the Middle East.
The 10-day cessation of hostilities comes after weeks of escalating tension, marking one of the most significant diplomatic achievements in the region this year. UNIFIL forces stationed along the border are expected to monitor the truce closely to ensure compliance.
