The head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan, Markus Werne, has warned that the ongoing war in the country has left a heavy humanitarian toll, with civilians—particularly children and women—bearing the brunt of the conflict.

According to Qahera News channel, Werne said Sudan is approaching the passage of thousands of days since the outbreak of the war, a prolonged conflict that has resulted in countless victims and widespread suffering among civilians. He noted that children and women account for more than two-thirds of those in need of humanitarian assistance, amid a severe lack of access to protection and basic services.

Werne expressed deep concern over the continued escalation of attacks targeting civilians and critical infrastructure, describing the situation as increasingly alarming.

He pointed to recent assaults on power stations, hospitals, and medical clinics, as well as agricultural production areas and other key operational facilities. These attacks, he said, have not been limited to the Darfur region but have also spread to Kordofan, further complicating an already dire humanitarian situation.

The OCHA official stressed that the United Nations continues to call on all parties involved in the conflict to immediately halt attacks on civilians and vital infrastructure. He also urged the warring sides to ensure safe corridors for civilians seeking to flee affected areas and to allow humanitarian workers to carry out their duties and reach those in need without obstruction.

Werne concluded by underscoring that the protection of civilians and unimpeded humanitarian access remain top priorities for the United Nations amid Sudan’s deepening crisis.
