The United Nations on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the continued suffering of civilians in Sudan as violence escalates, particularly in the regions of Darfur and Kordofan, where fighting has intensified in recent weeks.

UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement issued by the UN Information Centre that the deteriorating security situation is exacerbating humanitarian needs, renewing calls for the protection of civilians and for unimpeded humanitarian access to all affected areas.

Dujarric stressed that the regular and sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance is essential to providing life-saving aid and preventing further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

Sudan has been gripped by conflict since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) , triggering one of the world’s largest displacement crises. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes, while widespread shortages of food, medicine, and basic services have been reported across large parts of the country.

The humanitarian situation in Darfur and Kordofan remains particularly dire, with reports of civilian casualties, mass displacement, and repeated disruptions to aid operations due to insecurity and access restrictions.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned that continued fighting and impediments to humanitarian access risk worsening famine conditions and further destabilizing the country.
