The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is preparing for a high-profile week, headlined by discussions regarding Israel’s December 27 decision to recognize the region known as "Somaliland."

On Monday, the Council is scheduled to hold an open briefing under the agenda item "Threats to International Peace and Security."

This meeting was requested by the A3 Plus group, comprising Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Guyana, to address the implications of Israel's decision.

The request gained further diplomatic weight with support from China, Pakistan, and Russia.

Beyond the Somaliland issue, the Council’s weekly agenda includes several critical votes and sessions:

Mandate Renewals:

Renewing the mandates for the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

Bosnia and Herzegovina:

Adopting a presidential statement drafted by Slovenia to mark the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement.

New Membership and Leadership

With the start of the New Year, five newly elected members will begin their 2026–2027 terms:

Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia.

Notably, Somalia is set to assume the Presidency of the Security Council for the month of January.

The Council will conclude its activities this Friday with closed consultations to discuss the provisional program of work for the upcoming month, while continuing to closely monitor developments related to the Israeli decision on Somaliland.
