The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will meet on Sunday after Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years on Saturday.

The meeting aims to address the situation in the Middle East. This comes after Brazil, which holds the current presidency of the council, called for such a meeting.

In a statement made by U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern for the safety of civilians and called for their protection in accordance with international humanitarian law.

On Saturday, the international community was urged to take action and request that Israel stop their attacks and provocative actions towards the Palestinian people.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry specifically called on the UN Security Council to fulfill their responsibility by implementing measures to safeguard Palestinian rights.

Additionally, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi cautioned against a potential cycle of violence that could result from these actions.
