The United Nations Security Council has acknowledged Israel's commitment to open additional entry points to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza.
In a statement, the council members noted Israel's announcement to open the Erez border crossing and allow the use of the Ashdod port for aid deliveries into Gaza. However, they emphasized that more should be done to provide the necessary relief to address the significant needs in Gaza.
Israel made a commitment last week to open the Erez crossing situated in the north after a tense phone call between Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, and Joe Biden, the US President. During the call, Biden demanded "immediate action" on aid. However, reports indicate that aid trucks will not use the crossing because the Israeli government fears protests from far-right groups who are against any aid reaching Gaza.
On Wednesday, Israel's Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant, announced a plan to send food through a new crossing and a port just north of the besieged territory.
