The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan and urged the warring parties to return to the negotiating table, stressing that the continued fighting is pushing the country toward an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
The Secretary-General's remarks came during his participation in the Second World Social Development Summit in Doha, according to the UN Media Centre.
Moroever, Guterres stated that Sudan is experiencing a "horrific crisis that is spiralling out of control," adding that Al-Fashir city and its surrounding areas in North Darfur have become an "epicentre of suffering, hunger, violence, and displacement" for over 18 months.
Furthermore, he added that the situation worsened after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) entered Al-Fashir last week, confirming that "hundreds of thousands of civilians are trapped and dying from malnutrition, disease, and violence."
Additionally, Guterres pointed to reports of violations of international humanitarian law, including: indiscriminate attacks, targeting of civilians and medical facilities, gender-based and ethnic violence, and widespread executions.
He also affirmed the necessity of immediately halting the violence, ensuring unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, and preventing the flow of weapons and fighters into Sudan.
Moreover, The Secretary-General stressed that the time has come to end the conflict, saying: "Come to the negotiating table. End this nightmare of violence now. It is time for peace."
