United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the future of Syria is a decision to be made by Syrians themselves.
In a statement issued on Sunday evening, as reported on the official UN website, Guterres emphasized the significant work required to ensure a structured political transition to renewed institutions. He noted that his Special Envoy, Geir Pedersen, would collaborate with all Syrians to achieve this goal.
At the same time, Guterres reiterated his call for calm and the avoidance of violence during this critical period, while ensuring the protection of the rights of all Syrians without discrimination. He stressed the need to uphold the inviolability of diplomatic and consular facilities and their personnel under international law.
"We will need the support of the international community to ensure any political transition is inclusive and meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people in all their diversity," Guterres stated, emphasizing the necessity of restoring Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.
He also remarked that the UN would honor the memory of those who have borne the brunt of the 14-year-long conflict.
Concluding his statement, Guterres affirmed, "We remain committed to assisting Syrians in building a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom, and prosperity are shared realities for all. This is the path to sustainable peace in Syria."
