UN Secretary-General Mourns Death of Egypt's Mubarak

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Egyptian government and to the family of former President Hosni Mubarak, who has died on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for Guterres, said in a press conference held today that Mubarak played an important role in diplomatic efforts throughout the Middle East, especially with regard to promoting peace between Israelis and Palestinians and supporting the endeavours by the Arab League to end the conflict in the region.

He also reaffirmed the commitment of the UN to continue working alongside the government and people of Egypt in advancing the country's democratic development, respect for human rights, and economic prosperity for the benefit of all Egyptians."

Arab leaders also offered condolences on Tuesday over the death of  Mubarak.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud sent a cable of condolences to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi over the death of Hosni Mubarak.

In his cable, the king said: “We have been informed of the death of former Egyptian president Mohammed Hosni Mubarak. We send to Your Excellency; the family of the deceased; and your people, deepest condolences and sincere sympathies.”

Also, Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman sent a similar cable.

UAE

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan sent on Tuesday a cable of condolences to President Sisi on Mubarak’s death.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also dispatched similar cables of condolences to Sisi.

Kuwait

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah sent on Tuesday a cable to Sisi, voicing sincere condolence and solace over the death of Mubarak.

In the cable, the Kuwaiti emir prayed to Allah Almighty to have compassion upon Mubarak and to bestow patience on his family, Kuwaiti News Agency reported.

Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah voiced identical sentiments in a couple of separate cables addressed to the Egyptian president.

Bahrain

Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the crown prince, issued an edict to fly flags at half-mast following the death of former Egyptian president.

Bahrain’s flags will be flown at half-mast for one day at the kingdom’s public institutions, as well as embassies and diplomatic missions abroad.

Oman

Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq also sent a cable of condolences to Sisi over the death of the former president.

Palestine

Also, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas mourned the death of Mubarak, hailing the former Egyptian president’s supportive stances towards the Palestinian cause and Palestinian people.

Former Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak passed away earlier today Tuesday at the age of 91, after a long battle with the disease, according to state-owned TV.

Sources close to the family of former Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak revealed that his funeral will be conducted tomorrow, Wednesday at Al-Moshir Tantawy mosque.

Two days ago, Alaa Mubarak, the eldest son of Egypt’s former president tweeted that his father is in intensive care after suffering critical health problems, wishing a speedy recovery for him.

On January 24th, he said that the former president has undergone a critical surgery, pointing out that his health condition was stable.

It is worth mentioning that, Mubarak was born on May 4th, 1928 and he stayed in power for three decades ended by the popular uprising of January 25th, 2011.

Many Egyptians regarded the former president as a war hero for serving as a commander of the Egyptian Air Force during the October 6 War in 1973.
