UN Rebuilds Education, Nutrition, and Aid Systems for Gaza’s Children, Says Melissa Fleming

The United Nations has intensified its operations in Gaza to assist children suffering from hunger, trauma, and disrupted education, according to Melissa Fleming, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications (USG).

Fleming said the UN’s focus is “squarely on Gaza’s children,” with UNICEF and UNRWA leading efforts to restore education and health services. “UNRWA has already restructured its operations and is building new educational centers in temporary shelters so that children have a safe place to learn and feel normal again,” she told Alqahera News Channel.

She warned, however, that safety remains a major concern. “Even schools have been targeted in the conflict. We hope these new learning spaces can remain protected,” Fleming said.

The World Food Programme (WFP), she added, is concentrating on combating malnutrition through a responsible feeding program designed to restore children’s health gradually. “Starvation has reached alarming levels,” she said, “so our approach focuses on delivering the right nutrition safely and effectively.”

Moreover, USG confirmed that the UN has resumed food distribution and bakery operations across Gaza, helping stabilize local communities. “This allows us to reach people directly, ensuring they receive aid with dignity rather than risking their lives for basic food,” she said.

While Israel has begun to permit more humanitarian deliveries, Fleming cautioned that “the flow of aid remains far below what is needed.” She reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to expanding humanitarian access and protecting children — the most vulnerable victims of the ongoing crisis.
