UN Raises Alarm Over Worsening Humanitarian Conditions in Sudan’s North Darfur

The United Nations has voiced serious concern over the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation affecting thousands of civilians in Sudan’s North Darfur, where ongoing fighting continues to restrict access to life-saving assistance and drive new waves of displacement.

In a statement issued Thursday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that intensified military operations in parts of North Darfur have severely disrupted aid deliveries, leaving vulnerable communities without sufficient food, shelter, and basic services.

The UN said that around 2,000 families remain trapped in areas including Wadi Qardi and Um Saad, within the Karnou and Um Baro localities, as hostilities block humanitarian access. Prolonged isolation has heightened food insecurity and forced many residents to flee in search of safety.

Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that nearly 3,000 people were displaced from towns in South Kordofan between January 15 and 19, with many relocating to White Nile State. Displaced families face mounting shortages of essential supplies amid limited humanitarian reach and worsening security conditions.

UN agencies and their partners have continued efforts to expand emergency assistance, providing food aid, shelter materials, and water, sanitation, and hygiene support. However, OCHA stressed that major gaps persist due to funding shortfalls and security constraints, hindering sustained humanitarian operations.

The UN called on all parties to the conflict to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure and to facilitate safe, rapid, and unimpeded access for humanitarian workers. It also renewed its appeal for increased international funding to support relief efforts targeting millions affected by conflict and displacement across Sudan.

The crisis in North Darfur underscores the broader humanitarian emergency unfolding nationwide, as prolonged violence continues to displace millions and push large segments of the population toward severe food insecurity.
