On Tuesday, international donors promised $6.4 billion in humanitarian assistance to Syrians escaping a decade of civil war, falling short of a $10 billion target as governments grapple with weakened economies in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Reuters.

The European Union requested $4.2 billion for people displaced within Syria and $5.8 billion for refugees and their hosts elsewhere in the Middle East at the fifth annual conference to keep Syrians from famine.

The United Nations raised more than $7 billion in 2020 and 2019, but officials will continue to press for more commitments in this year, as the funds are pided between 2021 and 2022.

In Syria and the surrounding area, 24 million citizens need basic assistance, an increase of 4 million in the last year. It's also the highest number since Syrian President Bashar al-crackdown Assad's on pro-democracy demonstrators in 2011 triggered a destructive civil war.
