On Monday, the UN Secretary-General welcomed the temporary departure of hundreds of staff members and their families from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, in the midst of ongoing fierce violence between opposing military factions that has now lasted for a full two weeks.

António Guterres declared before the UN Security Council, "Let me be clear: the United Nations is not abandoning Sudan. We are dedicated to the Sudanese people and their desire for a safe and secure future. We support them during this horrible moment.

António Guterres said in a statement earlier that the relocation exercise had been completed "without incident" and that he appreciated the assistance of the Sudanese army soldiers and paramilitaries from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which allowed safe passage to Port Sudan, on Red Sea.

The Secretary-General once again urges the parties to end hostilities right away and permit all civilians to leave areas where fighting is taking place.
