The UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Khaled Khiari, from the Department of Political Affairs and Peace Operations, confirmed that the ceasefire agreement in Gaza is steadily deteriorating against the backdrop of the tensions and hostilities that have swept the Middle East in recent weeks, diverting attention from the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory.
According to the UN Information Centre, Khiari noted in his briefing to the Security Council that while diplomatic efforts continue to consolidate the ceasefire and implement the second phase of the comprehensive plan endorsed by the Security Council under Resolution 2803 (2025), talks regarding the disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups have yet to yield any agreement, raising concerns about a potential return to large-scale hostilities.
Khaled Khiari stated that civilians continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing violence, and the humanitarian needs on the ground remain immense.
He stressed that plans must be moved forward urgently, not only with regard to humanitarian aid, but also for early recovery and reconstruction.
