The UN humanitarian official, Lynn Hastings, has highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, where infectious diseases are rapidly spreading. Less than a third of all hospitals in the region are partially functioning, and shelters are overflowing beyond their capacity. The majority of people in Gaza do not have access to enough food or water.

According to a recent assessment by the UN World Food Program (WFP), almost half of the population in the north and one-third in the south are experiencing "severe levels of hunger."

Hastings emphasized that, as the occupying power, Israel is responsible for protecting Palestinian civilians in the enclave, ensuring their basic needs are met and allowing unimpeded access to aid. This includes permitting aid trucks to cross into Gaza and enabling humanitarians to aid all those who require assistance.
