The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called on Libyan leaders to swiftly reach an agreement on a clear electoral path and set a definitive timeline for the upcoming elections. In a significant move towards stabilizing the nation, the mission emphasized the urgent need to form a new unified government that would guide Libya towards these critical elections. This call comes with a stark warning: any delay in action could deepen divisions within the country, expose Libya to various risks, threaten the lives of its citizens, and undermine regional stability.
In a statement released on its Facebook page, marking the 72nd anniversary of Libya's independence, UNSMIL reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating Libyan dialogue. The mission highlighted that the responsibility of achieving national unity, peace, and security falls on Libyan parties. They are urged to fully commit to these objectives by actively engaging with the efforts of the UN Special Envoy, Abdallah Bathily, as reported by the Libyan news agency (WAL).
UNSMIL stressed the importance of prioritizing the Libyan people's demands over factional interests, urging political leaders to quickly appoint their representatives for the preparatory meetings.
