UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland warned of the repercussions of the funding crisis facing United Nations agencies that support basic services and social support, including emergency food assistance to the Palestinians.

In a briefing to the UN Security Council during the monthly session on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, Wennesland said, "The World Food Programme (WFP) will stop cash assistance to about 200,000 Palestinians next week, and UNRWA will not have the resources to provide basic services in September."

In the briefing, he touched on the recent Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of Palestinians, including women and children.

The UN official reiterated the call of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, for Israel to abide by its obligations under international humanitarian law.
