UN Aid Coordination Office (OCHA) launched an urgent appeal to donors for $71.4 million to respond to the needs of around 250,000 people affected by the floods in Derna, Libya. OCHA expected that more than 880,000 people, in five provinces, live in areas directly devastated by the storm and flash floods.
Rana Ksaifi, leading a UN refugee agency (UNHCR) team to Derna said: “I cannot explain what I saw on the way coming to Derna: roads split in half, massive rocks moved from the mountains to coastal areas and destroyed homes.”
UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon also expressed concern over the potential for floodwaters to have displaced landmines and unexploded ordinance (UXO) by the floodwaters, putting both residents and humanitarians at risk.
About 11,000 people are reported dead there, with a further 10,100 missing, according to the Libyan Red Crescent.
