UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with local civil society organizations in Gaza, has begun removing 370,000 tons of waste accumulated during the more than two-year war. This waste transformed the area into a pollution hotspot due to the collapse of basic services, including garbage collection and sanitation systems, posing serious health and environmental risks to residents because waste removal was impossible during the conflict.
According to the UN Information Centre, Dujarric noted that UNDP trucks and bulldozers have been removing the waste from the streets and transporting it to locations away from residential areas. Residents are navigating amidst the rubble and waste, a scene that reflects the immense scale of the health and environmental crisis facing the city.
