In a report issued by the United Nations, the Security Council hailed Egypt's role in defeating terrorist organizations, noting that Egypt has witnessed a clear decrease in terrorist activity, especially Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, affiliated with ISIS, since 2019.
The report, released by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stated that since 2019, no terrorist attack has been attributed to ISIS or Al-Qaeda in Egypt, and they have not claimed responsibility for any attack.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations explained in a report issued by the Security Council that the credit for this is due to counter-terrorism operations, and to the defection of the leaders of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, which reinforced the impression that the group is declining.
Egypt, on the other hand, has increased public investments in the areas of development and infrastructure, transport and housing in the Sinai.
This came during the fourteenth report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations presented to the Security Council on the threat posed by ISIS to international peace and security and the scope of the efforts made by the United Nations in support of member states in combating this threat.
The report read: "In Egypt, activity by Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis has been reduced. The group is a local affiliate of Da’esh, which has been featured extensively in its propaganda."
"No terrorist attacks have been attributed to or claimed by Da’esh or Al-Qaida in mainland Egypt since 2019," the report stated.
According to the UN report, this is credited both to counter-terrorism operations and an initiative to promote the defection of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis leaders, which has lowered morale and reinforced the impression that the group is declining, while public investments in infrastructure, transport and housing in the Sinai increased.
"In October, the Centre convened, in collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force and the Financial Intelligence Unit of Egypt, a regional workshop to strengthen capacities regarding the role of law enforcement and prosecution in countering and investigating terrorist financing," it stressed.
