The United Nations General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution calling on Israel, the occupying power, to allow full humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip, respect the inviolability of UN premises, and comply with its obligations under international law.
The resolution comes in direct response to the recent advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice, which clarified Israel’s responsibilities as an occupying power and as a member state of the United Nations.
The draft resolution, introduced by Norway along with more than 12 other countries, secured overwhelming support, passing with 139 votes in favor, 12 against, and 19 abstentions.
The text urges Israel to remove all barriers hindering the delivery of aid to Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need to facilitate humanitarian operations amid ongoing disruptions and restrictions. It also reaffirms the protection afforded to UN facilities and personnel under international law.
