The United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Lebanon, Imran Riza, announced a significant allocation of $24 million from the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund to support the country's most vulnerable and needy populations.
This funding aims to address the urgent needs of those affected in southern Lebanon.
A statement distributed by the United Nations elaborated that this financial aid would facilitate immediate support, including food, shelter, and healthcare, for those most in need across the country.
Riza urged the international community to promptly support humanitarian efforts in Lebanon, reminding that only 25% of this year's humanitarian appeal has been met so far.
A World Bank report last May highlighted that Lebanon's poverty rate has tripled over the past decade to 44% of the population. Based on a household survey covering the regions of Akkar, Beirut, Bekaa, Northern Lebanon, and most of Mount Lebanon, the report revealed that one in every three Lebanese in these areas was affected by poverty in 2022.
This underscores the urgent need to enhance social safety nets and create job opportunities to alleviate poverty and tackle growing inequalities.
