UN: Food Insecurity Threatens 48 Million People in West Africa

The United Nations (UN) has warned that food insecurity is worsening and spreading across West Africa, while about 48 million people suffer from famine in the conflict-ridden region, the highest rate in 10 years.

"Food insecurity has severely affected Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Nigeria, driven mainly by violence, the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and inflation," UN officials told a news conference in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

Officials added that for the first time, some 45,000 people in the Sahel region were on the brink of starvation. The vast majority of West Africans face catastrophic levels of hunger, including 42,000 in Burkina Faso.

"The situation is alarming. In the past year, we have seen a significant increase (31%) in the number of very hungry children placed in health facilities across the Sahel region over the years, it is getting more and more difficult for families who Trying to find nutritious food to eat."
