The head of UN humanitarian operations, Martin Griffiths expressed deep concern about the situation inside Al Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip.
Griffiths said on X (Formerly Twitter): “I'm appalled by reports of military raids in Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza.”
“The protection of newborns, patients, medical staff and all civilians must override all other concerns. Hospitals are not battlegrounds,” he stressed.
Israeli forces carried out a raid on Gaza's largest hospital on Wednesday claiming that they were targeting a "Hamas command centre."
They alleged that the centre was located below the hospital, where thousands of patients were receiving treatment and civilians were taking shelter. However, there is no evidence to support these claims, and the Gaza authorities as well as independent witnesses have denied them.
Prior to the raid, the hospital complex was bombarded for over four hours.
The attack has left around 650 patients and 5,000-7,000 civilians who were seeking refuge in the hospital trapped within its walls.
