On Wednesday, Antonio Guterres, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said the UN Secretary-General is very concerned about reports that a missile has exploded in Poland.
"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about reports that a missile has exploded on Poland’s territory. It is absolutely necessary to avoid an escalation of the war in Ukraine," Guterres said in a statement.
He added that the Secretary General sends his condolences to the families of the victims and hopes for a thorough investigation.
Earlier, local Polish media reported that two people were killed when two missiles fell in Lublin County, southeastern Poland, near the border with Ukraine, noting that Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called for an urgent meeting of the National Security and Defense Committee to consult on the matter.
Local media also reported that two Polish Air Force fighters took off from Tomaszow Lubelski airport, where representatives of the army and the Public Prosecutor's Office arrived at the site of the rockets' fall.
Russia denied the accusations that it launched the missile, which landed in Poland, describing it as a deliberate effort to escalate the situation in Kyiv.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said in previous statements that Poland does not have any conclusive evidence at the present time about who fired the missiles but added that it was most likely Russian-made.
He explained that there is no indication that there will be a similar recurrence of the incident.
