Dozens of people have been killed in tribal violence in a disputed region of South Sudan, the United Nations (UN) said.
In a statement, the UN indicated that "the battles in the oil-rich region of Abyei, adjacent to the border with Sudan, left 36 dead, according to a toll dated March 6, with an unknown number of wounded and reports of 5,000 displaced people."
UN added, "Tribal tensions have escalated in the past few weeks in the administrative region of Abyei, which is believed to have been caused by long-running disputes over land, tribal tensions, and revenge attempts."
A statement issued by the UN confirmed that the fighting has continued since February 10, but intensified in early March, so humanitarian operations in the affected areas were suspended and relief workers were transferred to safe areas.
