The United Nations Migration Agency said yesterday (Wednesday) that the number of displaced people as a result of the fighting in Sudan has reached about 2.2 million.
The UN agency stated in a statement that the fighting in Sudan forced 528,147 people to seek refuge in neighboring countries, while about 1.7 million people were displaced from their homes inside the country.
Fighting broke out in Sudan suddenly between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, killing and injuring hundreds.
On the other hand, the head of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, Volker Peretz, warned that the acts of violence taking place in the Darfur region may amount to "crimes against humanity."
Peretz said that since the outbreak of the latest fighting in April, "the security, human rights, and humanitarian situation has continued to rapidly deteriorate across the country, particularly in the regions of Greater Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan."
