The United Nations condemned the killing of civilians in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip over the weekend, which coincided with ongoing ceasefire efforts.
The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, expressed concern over the civilian deaths in the Israeli airstrikes in a press statement carried by the Palestinian news agency WAFA on Tuesday. He also welcomed the opening of the Rafah border crossing, which ensures the delivery of aid from Egypt to Palestinians as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
The UN official stated that civilians must be allowed to leave and return voluntarily and safely, in accordance with international law. He called for the delivery of essential humanitarian aid to Gaza in sufficient quantities and with fewer restrictions, through the Rafah crossing and all other crossing points. He also noted that some patients and their companions crossed directly from Gaza to Egypt on Tuesday.
