The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria has released a damning report regarding the wave of violence that struck the As-Suwayda governorate in July 2025. The report warns that the atrocities committed during the unrest may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

According to Commissioner Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, the violence involved severe violations by both government forces and local armed groups. The conflict, which initially began as sectarian tension between Druze residents and Bedouin communities, rapidly spiraled into a humanitarian catastrophe following the intervention of government troops and tribal factions.
The scale of the carnage is staggering. While the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the death toll has exceeded 2,000 people—including nearly 800 Druze civilians—official government records document at least 1,760 fatalities.
