The Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, urging all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to strictly adhere to its terms and their obligations under international law.
In a statement delivered by spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the UN chief stressed the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to safeguard civilian lives and mitigate the growing humanitarian toll.
Guterres called on all sides to treat the ceasefire as a critical opportunity to de-escalate tensions and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive and sustainable peace across the region.
He also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and other countries that helped facilitate the agreement, highlighting the importance of coordinated international engagement in resolving the crisis.
Meanwhile, his Personal Envoy, Jean Arnault, is currently in the region to support mediation efforts and advance prospects for a durable political settlement.
The statement underscores growing international momentum to contain the conflict and shift toward diplomacy, amid mounting concerns over regional stability and the humanitarian impact of continued fighting.
