UN Chief Antonio Guterres warned on Monday that disruptions to fertilizer shipments stranded in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a serious global food security crisis.
Guterres said the continued blockage of fertilizer supplies moving through the key maritime route risked affecting agricultural production and food supply chains worldwide.
The warning comes amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region that have disrupted shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global energy and commodity trade.
Analysts have cautioned that prolonged disruptions to fertilizer exports could drive up food prices and intensify pressure on countries heavily dependent on imports and agricultural subsidies.
