United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Iranian authorities to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from the use of force.
He expressed shock at reports of violence and the excessive use of force by Iranian authorities against protesters in various locations across Iran, which has resulted in dozens of deaths and numerous injuries in recent days.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated, in a message conveyed on behalf of the Secretary-General, that all Iranians must be able to express their grievances peacefully and without fear.
He emphasized that the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in international law, must be fully respected and protected.
Dujarric added that the Secretary-General urged Iranian authorities to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from the unnecessary or disproportionate use of force.
He further called for steps to enable access to information within the country, including the restoration of communications.
