During the African Climate Summit in Nairobi, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the international community to support Africa in becoming a major player in the renewable energy sector.

Guterres emphasized the potential of renewable energy to transform Africa and urged collaboration to make the continent a renewable energy powerhouse by 2030. He specifically called on G20 leaders, scheduled to convene in India, to take action against climate change.

The summit, attended by prominent leaders, government officials, and industry representatives, aimed to strengthen Africa's capacity in clean energy. Shifting towards clean energy in developing nations is crucial for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, including limiting global warming to below 2°C.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced a funding initiative of AED 16.5 billion (approximately 4.5 billion US dollars) to enhance Africa's clean energy capabilities. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, highlighted the initiative's focus on responsible and organized energy transitions, with the goal of showcasing the commercial viability of clean investments across Africa. The initiative aims to generate 15 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030 and contribute to the continent's social and economic development.

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to around 600 million people without access to electricity. Increasing access to clean energy has the potential to drive progress in Africa, which currently receives only a fraction of global investments in renewable energy. The continent requires an annual investment of $60 billion by 2030 to meet its energy needs.
