United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for urgent global efforts to end the war in Gaza, address the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and work toward lasting peace.

Speaking at the Extraordinary Arab Summit convened by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Guterres emphasized the immense suffering of Palestinian civilians and the critical need for a sustainable political solution.

"Since the horrific attacks by Hamas in Israel on October 7, the ensuing Israeli military operations have unleashed an unprecedented level of death and destruction in Gaza, generating immense trauma," Guterres stated. "Palestinians in Gaza have suffered beyond measure, and the risk of even greater devastation looms."

The UN Chief welcomed recent developments, including a ceasefire and a hostage deal, which have provided temporary relief for civilians. However, he warned against any resumption of hostilities, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan, and urged all parties to fully implement their commitments.

"All hostages must be released—immediately, unconditionally, and in a dignified manner," he said. "The release of Palestinian detainees must be carried out per the terms of the deal and also in a dignified way."

Guterres reiterated that humanitarian aid must not be subject to negotiation, calling for unrestricted access to lifesaving supplies for Gaza’s population. He praised the work of humanitarian organizations, particularly the Egyptian Red Crescent and UN agencies, for their role in delivering aid under extreme conditions.

Beyond the immediate crisis, the UN Chief stressed the necessity of a long-term political framework that ensures Gaza’s recovery and stability while respecting international law. He underscored that Israel’s security concerns must be addressed, but not through prolonged military occupation of Gaza.

"I appeal for the urgent and full support of UNRWA’s work, including financial support," Guterres added, highlighting the need for resources to sustain relief operations.

The Extraordinary Arab Summit served as a platform for regional leaders to discuss coordinated action on the crisis, reinforcing calls for a diplomatic resolution and international accountability.
