United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the UN’s steadfast commitment to advancing peace efforts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, emphasizing that the world must remain tireless in delivering life-saving aid and working toward lasting peace, according to a statement published on January 16, 2026.
Speaking before the UN General Assembly in New York, Guterres said the United Nations remains fully committed to peace in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, as well as in other conflict-affected regions, and continues its work to provide humanitarian assistance to those in urgent need. He welcomed the start of the second phase of the ceasefire in Gaza, underlining the importance of ensuring the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid and implementing the ceasefire in full, with the aim of paving the way toward a two-state solution in accordance with international law.
Regarding Ukraine, Guterres highlighted the necessity of exerting every effort to stop the fighting and achieve a just and lasting peace that aligns with the principles of the UN Charter and relevant UN resolutions. On the Sudan file, he urged all parties to agree on an immediate cessation of hostilities and resume dialogue toward a comprehensive and inclusive political process led by Sudanese actors, while stressing the protection of civilians.
Guterres also noted that the UN is engaged in setting global discussions on emerging challenges such as artificial intelligence and underscored the need for technology to serve humanity and uphold human dignity.
His remarks come amid broader warnings about threats to international cooperation and peace, including ongoing divisions within the global community and shrinking support for multilateral action.
