United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern on Wednesday over the rapidly escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran, as both nations continued to exchange airstrikes in a conflict that risks igniting a wider regional war.

“I remain profoundly alarmed by the ongoing military escalation,” Guterres said in a statement issued from UN headquarters. He urged all parties to pursue “immediate de-escalation leading to a ceasefire,” emphasizing the urgent need to halt the violence.

The UN chief warned that any further military interventions could spiral beyond control. “Any additional military interventions could have enormous consequences, not only for those involved but for the whole region and for international peace and security at large,” he warned.

Guterres also condemned the mounting toll on civilians. “The tragic and unnecessary loss of lives, injuries to civilians, and damage to homes and critical infrastructure are unacceptable,” he noted.

His remarks come amid rising fears of a broader conflict engulfing the Middle East, with international calls mounting for restraint and diplomacy.
