United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a formal call for the United States and Iran to resume direct negotiations to reach a comprehensive peace agreement. Speaking after weeks of intensified conflict, Guterres emphasized that a military solution to the ongoing regional crisis is impossible and urged both nations to prioritize diplomacy.

"After weeks of destruction and distress, it is clear that there is no military solution to the current conflict in the Middle East," Guterres stated. his remarks, also shared on social media platform X, underscored the urgency of reaching a settlement to prevent further humanitarian disaster.

Call for Absolute Ceasefire and Freedom of Navigation

The Secretary-General stressed that the current ceasefire must be maintained "absolutely" and that all violations of international law must cease immediately. A critical component of his message focused on maritime security, with Guterres demanding that all parties respect the freedom of navigation in vital waterways.

"All parties to the conflict must respect freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law," Guterres added. This comes at a time when tensions in the Strait have reached a boiling point, with recent reports indicating increased naval activity and threats to global shipping routes.

The Push for a Permanent Deal

The UN's plea for renewed talks follows the recent collapse of high-level negotiations in Islamabad. While those talks failed to produce a deal, the UN hopes that international pressure will bring the delegations back to the table. Guterres's call reflects a broader international consensus that without a formal treaty, the risk of a full-scale regional war remains dangerously high.

The UN chief concluded by affirming that the United Nations stands ready to support any diplomatic framework that ensures long-term peace and protects the sovereignty of all nations involved.
