United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned Israel’s decision to cut electricity and water supplies to facilities operated by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said on Thursday.
In a statement, Dujarric affirmed that the move would further undermine UNRWA’s ability to carry out its humanitarian mandate and implement its activities, warning that such measures would severely hamper the agency’s operations on the ground.
The UN has repeatedly stressed the critical role UNRWA plays in providing essential services, including health care, education, and humanitarian assistance, to millions of Palestinian refugees across the region.
Guterres has called for the protection of humanitarian operations and for ensuring that UN agencies can work without obstruction, particularly amid worsening humanitarian conditions.
