UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep alarm on Monday over reports of Palestinians killed and injured while attempting to access humanitarian aid in Gaza, calling the situation “unacceptable.”

“I am appalled by the reports of Palestinians killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza yesterday,” Guterres said in a statement. “It is unacceptable that Palestinians are risking their lives for food.”

He demanded an immediate and independent investigation into the incident and stressed that those responsible must be held accountable.

The UN chief also reminded Israel of its obligations under international humanitarian law to facilitate and ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance. “The unimpeded entry of assistance at scale to meet the enormous needs in Gaza must be restored immediately,” he said, emphasizing that UN operations must be allowed to proceed safely and in accordance with humanitarian principles.

Reiterating his call for an end to the violence, Guterres urged all parties to commit to an immediate, permanent, and sustainable ceasefire. He also called for the unconditional release of all hostages.

“This is the only path to ensuring security for all,” he added. “There is no military solution to the conflict.”

The Secretary-General’s statement comes amid escalating humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where access to food, medicine, and basic supplies has become increasingly scarce due to ongoing hostilities and restrictions.
