United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday called for stronger political and financial backing for UN peacekeeping operations, praising the role of peacekeepers in protecting civilians and supporting stability in conflict zones worldwide.
In a message marking the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, Guterres said more than 50,000 UN peacekeepers are currently deployed across the globe, operating in some of the world’s most dangerous environments.
“Far from home, in some of the world’s most dangerous settings, they deescalate tensions between hostile parties, oversee aid delivery, support elections, and create space for political solutions to grow,” the UN chief said.
Guterres paid tribute to peacekeepers serving around the world, while honoring nearly 4,500 personnel who have lost their lives since UN peacekeeping missions began in 1948, including 59 peacekeepers who died last year.
“No one should die serving the cause of peace,” he said.
The Secretary-General stressed that attacks targeting peacekeepers constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law, urging UN member states to uphold their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel.
He described peacekeeping as a “proven and cost-effective” tool for restoring stability and hope amid rising global tensions, but warned that missions require sustained international support to remain effective.
“This year’s theme, ‘Invest in Peace,’ calls for decisive action to ensure peacekeepers have the resources to carry out their vital mandates,” Guterres said.
He added that investing in peacekeeping represents “an investment in a safer future,” calling on the international community to continue supporting those working to maintain peace in conflict-affected regions.
The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29 to honor the professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice of peacekeepers serving under the UN flag worldwide.
