On Sunday, the UN and a relief organization reported that the torrential rains caused by torrential monsoon rains in the Darfur region in western Sudan have left at least 7 people dead, including children.
The General Coordination of Refugees and Displaced Persons in Darfur stated that heavy rains began on Friday evening in Kass locality in South Darfur, noting that among the dead were a pregnant woman and two boys aged between two and eight years.
The coordination explained that at least homes in camps for displaced people have collapsed or were partially damaged.
Toby Harward, a coordinator at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), announced the deaths, posting footage on Twitter showing flooded areas and homes.
He also mentioned that UNHCR and its partners are working to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected areas.
According to OCHA, at least 9,336 people have been affected by heavy rains and flooding in the provinces of South Kordofan, South Darfur, White Nile, and Kassala since the beginning of the rainy season in June.
Seasonal floods killed more than 80 people and inundated tens of thousands of homes across Sudan between July and September last year.
