A senior official of the United Nations (UN) food agency in Germany said on Saturday that the Group of Seven (7G) countries should increase humanitarian aid to help tackle the global hunger crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, news agencies reported.
On Sunday, the 7G begins a three-day meeting in Bavaria, Germany, against the backdrop of a warning from the UN that the world is facing an "unprecedented global hunger crisis" with the rise in commodity prices.
Martin Frick, director of the German World Food Program, told ND, a German news agency, that hunger can destabilize countries and therefore it is a major peace and security issue," noting that the current food price inflation, which exceeds 25 percent in 36 countries, is a "ticking bomb."
He also stressed that it is likely that the World Food Program (WFP) will not get more than half of the amount it needs this year, which is $21.5 billion, and therefore more aid is needed.
